The City of Port Alberni is looking into hosting its own Canada Day event this year.

Port Alberni previously had an annual Canada Day parade, hosted and organized by the Port Alberni Folkfest Multicultural Society. However, in 2023, the society dissolved due to dwindling volunteer numbers and no one else stepped up to take on the parade.

During a committee of the whole meeting on Monday, March 18, Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions asked city staff to coordinate a 2024 Canada Day family event in conjunction with other local groups or organizations.

Minions said on March 18 that this will give staff enough time to put something together in time for Canada Day, “hopefully” in partnership with another community group.

“These types of events require time and planning,” said Minions. “I think we need to initiate something happening on Canada Day.”

Minions clarified that city staff will be working within their current budget—nothing has been added to this year’s financial plan for a Canada Day event.
